death by daubt

doubt is quieter than failure. 
but it kills you sooner.
it walks in slowly.
No knock. 
sits on your chest
with a clipboard asking questions like
“who the hell do you think you are?”

and you answer. 
with silence. 
with cigarettes.
with unfinished pages. 
with “i’ll do it tomorrow.”

dreams don’t die in fire.
they rot in corners
while you check your phone again
and call it research.

doubt doesn’t shout. 
it whispers. and that’s worse. 
because it sounds like you.
and some days you believe it.
and the rest of the days
you don’t even notice
